Apple finally revealed the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops at its "Unleashed" event. You can order them today from the brand's website, but they certainly won't be available for a while.
Overall, the MacBook Pro features a new design with thinner edges, a redesigned display, added ports, and an even more capable processor, among other things.
We describe the 16-inch version to you in detail.
16-inch MacBook Pro price and availability
After the September Keynote, the brand has chosen this Monday, October 18 to present the rest of its flagship products. We discovered there the MacBook Pro 16, 14 inches and the AirPods 3.
Like the 14-inch model, the 16-inch is already on sale on Apple's website, but they won't be available until next week.
It retails for €2 for the 749,00GB SSD model, €512 for 2TB (979,00GB), and €1 for 16TB (3GB).
Design of the 16 2021-inch MacBook Pro
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros sport a new design, with an aluminum casing that makes the laptop feel smaller than previous models. The 16-inch MacBook measures 1,68 x 35,57 x 24,81 cm and weighs 2,1 kg.
The bezel has been significantly reduced, so much so that the MacBook Pro logo is no longer at the bottom of the screen.
Its upper part has a notch for the FaceTime HD 1080p camera, like on the iPhone. Apple made it the same depth as the menu bar so it doesn't encroach on the workspace.
Also, Apple seems to have been won over by users not liking the Touch Bar, as it disappeared in the new MacBook Pro M1, replaced by function keys.
Displays and Signage
They are also the first Apple laptops to use mini-LED displays, which Apple calls Liquid Retina XDR.
Used in the 12,9-inch iPad Pro, this is a backlight technology that features more LEDs than currently implemented. The result is better lighting control, sharper image contrast and greater dynamic range.
In addition, they support a refresh rate of 120Hz thanks to ProMotion technology.
They include a 1:000 contrast ratio, 000 nits of full-screen brightness, and 1 nits of peak brightness. The 1-inch version has a native resolution of 000 by 1 at 600 pixels per inch.
16-inch MacBook Pro specs
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models use the new M1 Pro, though the higher-end configurations of both sizes use the even more powerful M1 Max.
These chips appear to offer huge performance and power efficiency fixes over the regular M1. Here are the details:
- M1 Pro: 10-core CPU with 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores / 16-core GPU / 16-core Neural Engine / 200 Gbps memory bandwidth.
- M1 Max: 10-core CPU with 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores / 32-core GPU / 16-core Neural Engine / 400 Gbps memory bandwidth
- 16 GB unified memory, configurable to 32 GB (M1 Pro) or 64 GB (M1 Max)
Ports and adapter
The MacBook Pro is equipped with three Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. Apple also includes an SDXC card slot, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a headphone jack.
The power adapter connects to a new MagSafe connector, with 140 watts of power.
Autonomy
As for its autonomy, it is considerably improved, according to Apple's tests. The firm announces 21 hours of movie playback and up to 14 hours of wireless browsing.
Audio
Apple has upped its game when it comes to audio playback and recording. The new MacBook Pro features a six-speaker system, including four tweeters and two woofers. The woofers are force-cancelling, and Apple claims they deliver 80% more bass than before.
They also support spatial sound when playing music or videos with Dolby Atmos.
Apple calls its three-microphone array “studio-grade,” they feature a high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming. As for its jack, it is compatible with high impedance headphones.
