Despite the past two somewhat confusing years, that hasn't stopped Apple from overhauling most of its product line. Indeed, in addition to the release of updates, it has also succeeded in creating its own M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max processors on Mac and MacBook.
We had also seen the launch of new AirPods, a redesigned HomePod mini, a series of iPhone 13, improved iPads and an 8th generation of Apple Watch...
On March 8, 2022, during the first 2022 Peek performance event, the Cupertino company unveiled 4 new products (an iPad, an iPhone, a computer with a new chip, the M1 Ultra and an external screen).
Discover them in detail below alongside our predictions for the rest of the year, which promises to be just as busy.
IPads
iPad Air
Apple updated almost all of its iPads in 2021, except for the Air. And, it's done! Indeed, it was during the Peek Performance event that the new Air tablet (5th generation) was unveiled.
The fime has released the big game since the Air 5 has a Liquid Retina screen, embeds the M1 chip signed Apple, a new 12 Mp wide-angle front photo sensor, a USB-C port, 5G connectivity for its cellular versions, and Touch ID technology.
Art-savvy users will enjoy the 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU for twice the graphics performance of its predecessor.
Sortie: pre-orders open on March 11, 2022 and sales at Apple and resellers from March 18, 2022. It is sold from €699 for the Wi-Fi version and from €869 for the Cellular.
iPad Pro
According to Mark Gurman, a new iPad Pro, with an updated design and support for wireless charging, should be released.
Since the current iPad Pro is equipped with an M1 chip, what about this new model? Will it acquire the M2 chip at the same time as the MacBook Air?
Predicted release date: November 2022
iPad 10,2 inches
A new standard iPad in 2022? In any case, this is what Gurman indicates...
Predicted release date: October 2022
iPhones
It is certain that we will see an iPhone 14 in September, or at least in October 2022. The rumors also mentioned an iOS device for 2022 and they turned out to be true, the answer below.
iPhone 14
There will, of course, like every year, be a new iPhone. However, we hear that there will no longer be an iPhone mini, but a larger standard iPhone, corresponding to the Pro Max.
We further expect all models to feature a 120Hz refresh rate, only available on the Pro models.
Another novelty, and crucial information for fans of the Apple brand, the notch could get a makeover in the form of a punch and a pill. More interestingly, it could even disappear on the Pro versions there too. However, this remains a rumor as some believe that the legendary notch will only disappear for the iPhone 15... case to follow.
For more, read our roundup of iPhone 14 rumors.
Forecast release date: September/October 2022
iPhone SE
Apple revealed a new iPhone SE at its March 8 Peek performance event.
It keeps its design that we know well from its 1st edition in 2016, which means that it still integrates the home button with Touch ID technology. Otherwise, Apple made it tougher, as much as the standard and Pro iPhone 13, and gave it an IP67 rating.
To be up to date and compete better with Android, it is equipped with 5G connectivity, which implies more speed on all fronts.
On the photo side, the SE 3 now offers the Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles and Deep Fusion functionalities which are supported by the A15 Bionic chip, which is also found in the current flagships.
In summary, you will benefit from an iPhone that is compact, powerful and above all at an affordable price (although it is more expensive than the iPhone SE 2020).
Sortie: pre-orders open from March 11, 2022 for sale from March 18 from Apple, mobile operators and resellers.
It is available from €529, in capacities of 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB and in Midnight (black), Stellar Light (white) and (PRODUCT)RED (red) colors.
Desktop and Laptop Macs
Apple revealed in June 2020 that it would move all of its Intel Macs to its own silicon within two years.
It delivered on its promise by updating many of its machines, including the MacBook Air, Mac mini, 24-inch iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Also, in fall 2022, Apple should bring an update to macOS. In fact, it could be Mammoth with new features based on machine learning (AI).
For the rest, here are the models likely to receive this same hardware overhaul in 2022:
Mac mini
The Mac mini already features the M1 chip, but a new high-end model with an updated design, more ports, and an M1 Pro/Max processor is in the pipeline from Apple. An update from the M1 to an M2 processor is also expected this year.
iMac 30 inches and above
The smallest iMac in the line was updated in April 2021, with a colorful new design and a bigger screen. But what about the 27-inch model?
It is likely to be replaced by a version with a 30 or 32 inch screen. It could also benefit from a similar redesign as the 24-inch, although the colors might be different.
We can expect M1 Pro and M1 Max processors (or even the M1 Ultra presented on March 8 at the Peek performance event), a ProMotion mini-LED screen, in addition to a new design.
Apple might refer to this new iMac as an iMac Pro, or top of the line.
Predicted release date: June 2022 - WWDC
Mac Pro
As for the Mac Pro, work on the Apple Silicon is reportedly underway, with a 32-core CPU and up to 128-core GPU.
If Apple decides to take advantage of WWDC 2022 to showcase its Pro-oriented desktop Macs with M chips, then we could experience the Mac Pro.
Predicted release date: June 2022
MacStudio
Welcome to the Mac Studio, this is a one-of-a-kind desktop computer that Apple has gone to great lengths to make extremely powerful.
How did she do it? She decided to create a device equipped with the M1 Max chip and a new, even more muscular chip: the M1 Ultra, the choice is yours. According to the brand, this is a spectacular step forward, whose performance so far is "unprecedented". Technically, it brings together 114 billion transistors, "a number never reached on a personal computer chip".
The Mac Studio with M1 Ultra can be configured with 128 GB of unified memory, a 20-core CPU, can have a 64-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Engine!
If you are a creator, artist, 3D designer and you have the right budget (nearly €5 to invest), then go for it! The key word of this hardware combination is: speed; not to mention the SSD that can reach a speed of 000 GB/s.
The Mac Studio is thus unique by its hardware, but also by its design, which is a real revolution. It's crafted from extruded aluminum with a square shape, measuring 7,7 inches across and just 3,7 inches tall. It can easily slip under a monitor to raise it for example. Also, don't worry about the risk of overheating, Apple has thought of everything, since the Mac Studio has a unique dual ventilation system. It helps keep internal components cool while you're working on demanding tasks.
Sortie: pre-orders launched from March 11, 2022 and purchases available from March 18, 2022. It is sold from €2.
MacBook Air
According to rumors, the MacBook Air could be redesigned, including a selection of colors similar to those of the iMac.
There is talk of a 2022 launch for this new machine, which will apparently be equipped with the M2 chip. We might see it alongside the iMac and Mac mini in the summer, or wait for more...
Predicted release date: November 2022
MacBook Pro 13 inches
Some think the 13-inch MacBook Pro will be discontinued when the new MacBook Air M2 arrives. Others suggest a 13-inch MacBook will see the light of day instead of a 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Gurman, on the other hand, believes in an entry-level MacBook Pro coming out in 2022. Does that mean it will have an M2 chip, if so will it be good enough to be considered? like Pro?
Predicted release date: November 2022
Monitor
studio display
For a complete work environment, equip yourself with the new Studio Display, an immersive 5-inch Retina 27K display with more than 14,7 million pixels, 600 nits brightness, P3 color gamut and support for support more than a billion colors.
It features an A13 Bionic chip and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera with Center Frame, three mics, and six speakers with spatial audio.
Sortie: pre-orders launched from March 11, 2022 and purchases available from March 18, 2022. It is sold from €1.
Processors
M2 processor
The sequel to the M1 processor is expected to arrive in 2022, and fall seems like the perfect time.
Apple would expect a chip with eight cores (four performance and four efficiency), similar RAM limits (8 GB or 16 GB) and a slight increase in performance.
However with the announcement of the M1 Ultra, the M2 may not see the light of day this year...
Predicted release date: September 2022
Les Apple Watch Series
There could be more than one new Apple Watch in 2022.
Apple Watch Series 8
There were many rumors of an all-new design for the Apple Watch in 2021, but when it launched, no changes were apparent.
There is a theory that Apple changed its plans at the last minute due to some creative issues.
Maybe 2022 will be the year of a redesigned Apple Watch Series 8...
Predicted release date: September 2022
Apple Watch SE 2
Mark Gurman and other experts have announced that a new SE model will be in the pipeline for the brand to be released in 2022.
For better performance, it is not impossible that it embeds an S6 processor, and perhaps features that are currently missing, such as heart rate measurement.
Predicted release date: September 2022
Apple Watch Sport
In his predictions for 2022, Mark Gurman suggests that Apple is making a durable Apple Watch model for athletes.
He has already mentioned that this watch will be called Apple Watch Sport and will have a design designed to resist shocks.
Predicted release date: September 2022
Audio
In the context of the announcement of the arrival of a high resolution subscription on Apple Music in June 2021, it is time for Apple to improve the capabilities of some of its audio products.
AirPods Pro
In October 2021, Apple recently updated its standard AirPods, one of its most popular products.
As for the AirPods Pro 2, whose last update dates from October 2019, they are eagerly awaited by fans of the brand.
Predicted release date: September 2022
HomePod with display
It might not happen in 2022, but we're hoping for some truth to the rumors that Apple is currently working on a HomePod with a display.
We've always believed that having a display on HomePod would provide a more enjoyable user experience. This would allow you to watch podcasts, reports and YouTube videos, but above all communicate via FaceTime.
Predicted release date: to be confirmed
Other novelties
If Apple were ever to innovate outside of the products it currently manufactures, it could be left behind by technological advancements. It is therefore not surprising that the company is working on new areas.
Game console
We think it could be a simple evolution of the Apple TV, but there are reports that Apple wants to sell a console to compete with the Switch.
Predicted release date: to be confirmed
AR glasses
The brand has clearly expressed its interest in augmented reality, and we could hear more about its plans for AR or even VR glasses in 2022!
She may show off their design at WWDC, but wait until 2023 to launch them.
Predicted release date: to be confirmed
Apple Car
The Apple Car was the biggest rumor in 2016, but it's since emerged that Apple has scaled back its ambitions.
The company reportedly employed up to 1 developers on Project Titan and set up various front companies, including Faraday Futures and Sixty Eight Research.
Industry talks had suggested 2020 as a possible date for a launch... Obviously that hasn't happened, yet it looks like something is still brewing, the question being what?
Release date forecast: 2025 or never
