Preliminary information
Before getting to the heart of the topic and explaining, practically, how to proceed to succeed connect iPad to TV without cable, it is necessary to make some clarifications. As I said at the beginning of the article, the operation in question is feasible but, similarly to when the classic cables are used, it is necessary to rely on "something" that acts as an intermediary between the Apple-branded tablet and the TV.
What I'm referring to is theApple TV, the famous multimedia box from Apple, or the HDMI dongle Google Chromecast, two devices that must be connected to the TV and which, among the various features offered, also manage to fulfill the purpose of this tutorial. And if you do not have either of these two devices or it is not your intention to buy them because they are too expensive, you can evaluate the hypothesis of using other cheaper dongles: there are many, but unfortunately they are not always able to perform their purpose impeccably.
As an alternative to what has already been indicated, if you own one Smart TV, you can take advantage of the connectivity functions offered by the latter and some special applications for iOS, to be installed on the iPad. In all cases, however, keep in mind that some applications (eg. NOW TV) prevent the transmission of their contents from the iPad to the TV, so even if you make all the various connections you will not be able to reproduce what you are interested in.
Connect iPad to TV without cable
Having made the above clarifications, let's get to the heart of the matter and then let's find out how to proceed to be able to connect the iPad to the TV without cable. Below you will find indicated how to do it by adopting the solutions mentioned in the previous lines: Apple TV, chromecast he Smart TV. I also proceeded to insert a passage dedicated to alternative solutions, that is to the "cheap" dongles, but I still renew the invitation to evaluate this solution only in "extreme" cases.
Apple TV
The first and most effective way you have on your side to be able to connect the iPad to the TV without using any cable is to take advantage of theApple TV home Apple, as easily deduced from the name itself.
In case you were not aware of it, it is a device that looks like a small black box, which must be connected to the TV via HDMI cable and to the Internet, via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Rent and / or buy iTunes movies, watch movies and series on Netflix, listen to music on Apple Music, view photos on iCloud and perform various other operations - all right on your TV screen.
However, considering that it also supports the function AirPlay, which allows you to use the wireless network to transmit the screen of the iPad (and other iOS devices) on that of the TV or send audio / video content in streaming to the latter, for your needs the Apple TV appears to be without very useful doubt.
At the moment, there are two versions of Apple TV on the market: that of 4 generation is that 4K. Both have an App Store with many apps and games for all tastes, a touch remote control and support for Bluetooth controllers but, in addition, the second model has the advantage of allowing the vision of content in 4K, in fact. You can buy them in all major electronics stores (physical and online) and on the Apple website.
See offer on Amazon
Until recently there was also an Apple TV of 3 generation, with a limited range of applications (not expandable via the App Store), but is no longer sold by Apple. Eventually, it can be found through third-party stores or used, buying it from a private individual or in any case at stores (physical or online) that deal with selling second-hand items. As easily deducible, in this case, the prices turn out to be much lower than the most recent Apple TV models.
As for the possibility of using the Apple TV as an intermediary between the iPad and the TV, if you have not already done so, to begin with, connect the Apple set-top box to the electric socket, through the appropriate power cord, and on TV, taking advantage of the HDMI cable (not included in the sales package).
Subsequently, light on the TV, select (if necessary) theHDMI input using the remote control and wait for the Apple TV to go into action (when it is ready to use the white light front stops flashing and changes to fixed). Then follow the simple one setup procedure that is proposed to you and connects the device to the same wireless network to which you connected your iPad. For more information, refer to my guide on how Apple TV works.
Once these preliminary steps have been completed, you can cast the iPad screen on the TV by calling the Control Center of iOS by swiping from bottom to top on the screen or, if you have an iPad Pro, by swiping from the top right corner of the screen to the bottom. Then he presses the button Duplicate Screen, select the your Apple TV from the list and that's it.
If, on the other hand, you want to transmit a single movie or a single photo on the TV screen or only the audio content, view / play the reference content on the iPad display, tap on theAirPlay icon (Quella with the screen and the triangle) that appears at the bottom right and selects the item Apple TV from its menu.
Alternatively, invoke the Control Center as I indicated earlier, tap on double parenthesis found in the box relating to content reproduction at the top right and select the option Apple TV give the menu check if you press.
chromecast
Also use chromecast di Google it can be a very valid solution to connect the iPad to the TV without using cables, although with some limitations compared to the Apple TV, since it is a device not produced by the Cupertino company.
If you've never heard of it, Chromecast is nothing more than a dongle, that is to say a "gadget" that allows you to transmit audio / video content from a device, in this specific case from the iPad (but also and above all from devices Android and computer) to the TV in an extremely simple way. It connects to the TV via the HDMI port and the contents are "projected" using a technology called G, through the various supported apps (from mobile) and through Chrome (from computer).
On the market there are two different Chromecast models for video transmission: the one Standard and that with Google TV. The first costs 39 euros and supports Full HD resolution, while the second costs 69,99 euros and supports 4K resolution, it also supports the installation and direct use of apps and comes complete with remote control. You can buy them in any electronics store (physical and online) and on the official Google store.
To take advantage of Chromecast to perform the operation covered by the tutorial, if you have not already done so, first of all connect the device to a power source through special cable and at the door HDMI of the TV. Subsequently, light on the TV and select theHDMI input using the remote control.
Therefore, carry out the initial configuration Chromecast via the app Google Home, which you can download for free on your iPad by connecting to the dedicated section on the App Store. All you have to do is log in to your Google account, consent to the use of the location, connect to the wireless network generated by the Chromecast, return to the app, wait for the device to be detected by the latter, check that the code displayed on the tablet screen matches the one shown on the TV, specify the house where you have installed Chromecast and choose the Wi-Fi network to use (which must be the same one the iPad is connected to). For more information on this, read my guide on how to install and configure Chromecast.
Having completed the preliminary steps above, you will be able to view / play the contents on the iPad directly on the TV and wirelessly by starting one of the supported apps (such as the ones I told you about in my post on Chromecast applications), by tapping on thetransmission icon (Quella with the screen with the waves of Wi-Fi) and selecting the content to be broadcast on the TV.
For screen mirroring, although this function is not officially supported by Chromecast, you can turn to third-party apps, such as Replica which uses the screen recording function of iPadOS and iOS to transmit the screen of the device to the Google stick. To use it (free, with banner ads), just start it, consent to the use of the Bluetooth, select the chromecast to use and press the buttons I will start e Start transmission.
Smart TV
If you own one Smart TV, like the ones I told you about in my buying guide, then I am happy to inform you that you can connect the iPad without using wires and above all without using additional accessory devices. How? I'll explain it to you right away.
If the wireless transmission technologies of the Smart TV you own are compatible with the iPad (as in the case of AnyView Cast of televisions Hisense), you can view on the TV screen the contents played on the Apple tablet using specific applications (eg. Netflix), by simply tapping ontransmission icon (Quella with the screen with the Wi-Fi waves next to it) and selecting the TV name from the menu that opens. However, make sure, in a preventive manner, that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Then there are some specific apps, such as AllCast, downloadable from the App Store at no cost, which also allow you to view content saved in the iPad memory, such as photos and videos, and content on the local network on the Smart TV. For more on that, read my post focusing on apps to connect phone to TV.
Alternative solutions (to be avoided)
I had anticipated it in the previous lines, if you do not have any of the above equipment and you have no intention of making the purchase, you can connect iPad to TV without cable even using dongle, that is, devices similar to Chromecast, but much more economic and of different brands. Even then, these are solutions that you can find in electronic stores (both physical and online), but personally I do not recommend its use.
Their operation is not all that dissimilar to the Google home solution, but not all of them offer noteworthy performance. In fact, although full compatibility with AirPlay and Google Cast is declared, in reality many of them are not able to sustain stable connections. So, if you really want to invest in a device of this type, first look for more information on the Net in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Connect iPad to TV with the cable
I know, we said no cables, but for the sake of completeness of information it seems only right to point out my guide on how to connect iPad to the TV, through which I have also described what are the "wired" solutions to carry out the operation covered by this guide.
I anticipate right away that you can do it using Cavi e adapters produced directly by Apple. To be precise, if you own a iPad Pro 2018 or later, you can use any USB-C to HDMI adapter. If you own a iPad Pro prior to 2018, an "Standard" iPad or iPad Mini, you can use the adapter instead from Lightning to digital AV, which transforms the Lightning output of the Cupertino tablet into an HDMI output and allows you to simultaneously charge the iPad using a Lightning cable.
And if you have a slightly older iPad, you can use the adapter 30-pin digital AV, which turns your tablet's dock out into an HDMI out and allows you to charge your iPad at the same time using a dock cable.
In the case of televisions without an HDMI port, the cable must be used Composite AV, which allows you to connect your iPad to your TV using the composite cable and the red and white analog audio ports. You can find all the information about it in the tutorial that I linked to you just now.
