How to use your iOS and iPadOS apps on your Mac M1?

The M1 processors, embedded in the latest Apple computers, are based on a technology initially developed for the iPhone and the iPad, its Pro tablet (2021) also integrates this chip.  

As a result, it is natural that Apple Silicon brings the possibility of running applications from the iOS or iPadOS operating systems. This compatibility is sometimes useful, especially when there is no equivalent on your macOS. 

However, note that some cannot be downloaded or installed from the App Store, because their developer has not accepted the process upstream, this is the case of Pokémon Go for example.  



How to install your iOS and iPadOS apps on your Mac

To take advantage of applications available on iPhone and iPad on your Mac, logically, you will simply have to go through its App Store. For it :
 

  • Open your macOS App Store 
  • In the search bar, type the name of the app of your choice  
  • Under the title Results for, click on the tab iPhone & iPad Apps 
  • The results then switch to compatible utilities, just click the button Obtain

If you want, you can also open iOS or iPad apps you already have:
 

  • Open your macOS App Store 
  • To find your already purchased app, click on your account in the lower left corner, then under the heading Account, meeting on Apps for iPhone and iPad.  
  • Click the iCloud download button to download it to your Mac.   

How to use your iOS or iPadOS apps on your Mac

Applications are downloaded to the Mac's Applications folder and can be launched like any other Mac application.  



Remember, though, that they weren't originally designed for your computer's interface.  

To guide you, you will find descriptions of each application that explain to you which platform they were originally designed for. Some are also marked "Not verified for macOS", which means you may be experiencing performance issues.  


Interface controls  

Many applications have been designed to be used on a touch screen. However, they are also adapted to be compatible on your Mac, Apple allows you to adjust the input parameters in order to have more control.  

To do this, enable touch alternatives:
  

  • Open your app on Mac 
  • Tap on its name in the menu bar, then go to Preferences   
  • Click on Touch Alternatives 
  • Click on the button On to activate them 

You will also be able to customize game settings with keyboard and trackpad options in the tab Game Control.
