During its spring Keynote, Apple unveiled its new iMac with a redesigned design, a more powerful chip and many other improvements. It even borrows colorful aesthetic traits identical to those of past iMacs and the iPad Air.
In the presentation announcing the arrival of the new iMac model, Apple said that this redesign was made possible thanks to the architecture of its M1 chip system. Either way, it was the subject of the biggest announcement at the "Spring Loaded" event, but also the most notable Apple product in years.
The integration of the M1 chip
There's no denying that the successful launch of Apple's new M1-based MacBooks was significant on many levels.
The integration of this powerful processor over the Intel ones had its effect, which created high expectations for upcoming devices, like the iMac. This popular computer, both with ordinary users and professionals, therefore had to take advantage of such an update to its SoC.
Now, the iMac isn't just another Mac with Apple's silicon, it's also Apple's most iconic desktop computer. Despite the presence of the 1-inch MacBook Pro M13 in the market, the new iMac could be Apple's first M1 machine truly designed for professionals.
Color
The first aluminum iMac was presented in 2007. Since then, it has had only one design change, a modification that has not really transformed its appearance.
Overall, its aesthetic works well enough, but the standards have changed for several years. Because of this, it looked very dated until then, with thick edges and a towering, unbalanced “chin,” despite being a great spot for the Apple logo.
Today, its new minimalist design is user-focused and features the same stand as the Pro Display XDR. Its lower part has disappeared, its contours have been reduced and, as on the iPhone and iPad, the brand logo is on the back.
As we suspected, it is available in pastel colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, silver and mauve.
So, while the iMac no longer met the criteria that made Apple's reputation, such as elegant design and state-of-the-art technology, things changed with the arrival of the new kid on the block.
The Apple Spirit
Performance and design are must-have features, but more than any other product made by Apple, the iMac is a symbol of innovation.
It's the legacy of Steve Jobs and Jony Ive, and even in the era of the iPhone and iPad, Macs and iMacs are often the first products that come to mind when the Apple brand is mentioned.
Over time, that spirit had waned, with an iMac sporting a design that was over a decade old. Much to our delight, things have changed, and while it's not as iconic as the original, its evolution is heart-warming.
