McAfee Total Protection 2021 is software dedicated to protecting your Mac against viruses, malware, ransomware, as well as monitoring unauthorized software running on your own macOS.
Features
Total Protection's Real-Time Scanning feature monitors your Mac in the background while you get on with other tasks. By default, it does not scan compressed files, messages, or network drives, as this would require a more intense scan which would then affect overall performance.
These options can be enabled easily, but you can rely on the scheduled full scan, which runs with its own set of options and performs this deeper examination by default.
You can schedule full scans of your Mac at regular intervals. By default, the scan happens once a week at 4 a.m., which means your Mac should be on at that time. If that doesn't work for you, then feel free to simply change the day and time, and the frequencies (daily, weekly, monthly, or never, the latter being the one we don't advise choosing of course).
WebAdvisor is an additional function used to identify dangerous sites, it issues warnings or prevents them from loading. It is also available separately as a free plugin for Firefox, Chrome and Edge, but is browser independent.
If you purchase a multi-device license, your iPhone may participate in the protection action; as part of the Total Protection subscription, you can install the McAfee Security iOS app. This offers threat scanning, VPN and browser security, a passcode-protected media vault, plus options to track if iPhone is misplaced and wipe if stolen. .
Going back to the Mac software, Total Protection's firewall adds another layer of protection for incoming and outgoing traffic.
Ease of use
Total Protection's interface is exceptionally simple. It mainly revolves around real-time and scheduled scans to detect threats and unwanted software, browsing safety and firewall (when updated).
When Total Protection finds threats, it fixes them automatically by default. We would have preferred a more detailed report than just the number of items processed; knowing exactly what was found and where could be very helpful. However, the most important thing is to identify and isolate unwanted elements.
When a suspicious item was found that could not be cleaned, it was quarantined. Quarantined items can be reviewed and restored or deleted, depending on your preference.
performances
We've seen occasional slowdowns in Mac performance, especially when moving and accessing lots of files. Finding a balance between real-time protection and no impact on Mac performance is a difficult challenge for him.
There are options to control what actions trigger background scanning: reading from a file, writing to a file, or both.
Importantly, Total Protection lived up to its name; it managed to spot issues like our compromised installers the moment they were unzipped, and rid them of unwanted code.
Unfortunately, none of the three independent test labs we refer to for a second opinion have tested Total Protection.
Price and availability
McAfee Total Protection is offered as an annual subscription in three plans: for one, five or ten devices. For a single device, the annual cost is €69,95, but with its reduction of €40 it drops to less than €30.
To protect five devices (regardless of operating system), including smartphones, it will cost you €89,95, or €39,95 after discount. If you want to cover more devices, for ten devices is €99,95, or €39,95 after discount.
Conclusion
Total Protection spots and eradicates a wide range of potential threats and unwanted software activity, and can secure mobile devices as well as Macs and PCs. We did notice a performance hit on our Mac during our testing, but overall Total Protection did its job well and was fairly unobtrusive.
