The new technology that makes Chrome and Edge safer

The new one could arrive soon tech which makes it safer Chrome ed Edge, two of the most used browsers by users. The safety feature is called CET and, in its defensive methodology, it exploits expedients integrated into thehardware of the computer to block the main types of malware attacks.

According to early information CET, an acronym that stands for Control-flow Enforcement Technology, should arrive in the middle of April on all Chromium-based browsers. Initially introduced in 2016, this security implementation was first added in 2020 on computers equipped with 11th generation Intel processor and later on those with processor AMD Ryzen 5000 with Zen 3 architecture. If CET is destined to appear on all products equipped with the same type of core, no information has yet been provided on the possibility of seeing the same technology on Mozilla, browser that uses Quantum as a rendering engine.

CET, the importance of security functionality

The CET feature was created to protect computers from Return Oriented Programming bindings (ROP) e Jump Oriented Programming (JOP). According to Intel Vice President Tom Garrison, CET was designed to "protect against the misuse of legitimate code through control-flow hijacking attacks - techniques widely used in large classes of malware"Among the vulnerabilities are those that allow hackers to bypass the sandbox browsers, or execute code remotely while browsing the web.

Second Baiju V Patel, Microsoft's cloud solutions specialist, "JOP and ROP attacks can be particularly difficult to detect or prevent because the attacker uses the existing code running from creatively executable memory in order to change the behavior of the programFor this reason, this new feature will ensure better security for both the Edge browser and Chrome.

CET, how to check if it is active on Windows 10

Also Windows 10 has implemented CET, through what has been called Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. If your computer is equipped with one of the processors mentioned above, you can do a quick check to know the active processes that use this functionality.

To do this, simply start Activity Management (Task Manager) and select the tab view Details. On the header of one of the columns on the screen, just right click and choose the item Select Columns in the menu that just appeared. Finally, in the new window just tick the wording Stack protection applied through hardware. Once available, the column will allow you to view the required information.
