Downloading and updating macOS is child's play! Nevertheless, you will have to go through a few steps before you start.
Presented at WWDC in June 2021, Monterey, the latest version of macOS, has been available for download since October 25, 2021.
In this tutorial, we tell you how to get and install it on your Mac. We're also interested in its older version, macOS Big Sur, which you might want to install on an older or Monterey-incompatible Mac.
How to install macOS Monterey on your Mac?
As of October 25, 2021, the latest official release of macOS is Monterey.
If you want to update your Mac, whether from Big Sur or an older version of macOS, the methods differ.
If Big Sur, Mojave, or Catalina is installed on your Mac, the update will be done through the software.
- Open them System Preferences.
- Click on Software update.
- Click on Update profile now to download the installer for the new version of macOS.
- Once the installer has downloaded, click Installer.
Please note that your Mac will be out of service for a short time while the software installs.
Upgrade from High Sierra or earlier
If you are using High Sierra or earlier, follow these steps:
- Launch the App Store on your Mac.
- Search MacOS.
- Click on Obtain (older versions of the App Store may have a button Download).
- Provide your Apple ID if prompted.
The installation file will be in Applications but, whatever happens, it will open automatically.
How do I install an update to macOS Big Sur, Catalina or Mojave?
If you're looking to update to the latest version of Big Sur, from an older version of macOS, or from another version of Big Sur, we explain what you need to do below.
First, make sure you have one of the following devices:
- 13-inch MacBook Pro, M1 (2020)
- 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020)
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
- 15-inch MacBook Pro (2019)

- MacBook Air (2012) or later
- MacBook Pro (2012) or later
- Mac mini (2012) or later
- iMac (2012) or later
- iMac Pro
Installing macOS updates once you're using Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave is a little different. Rather than opening the Mac App Store, you'll need to do the following:
- Open them System Preferences
- Click on Software update
- Select Update software.
If you already have the new version of macOS and you simply want to benefit from the latest update of this software, you will find it under the dedicated tab directly on the App Store.
- Open your Mac's App Store.
- Click on Updates.
- Click on Update profile next to the version you want to install.
If the software hasn't been downloaded yet (you can set it to do so automatically), it will be downloaded in the background. Once done, you will see a notification telling you that it is ready to install. You can then choose to update now or later.
