Windows 10 1809: Microsoft recognizes a bug with compressed archive files

Windows 10 1809: Microsoft recognizes a bug with compressed archive files

Updated 25/10 with information from Microsoft. It has now been three weeks since Microsoft's October update for its Windows 10 system was first offered to the public before being pulled. The publisher has already offered fixes but has not finished with the bugs, a new one has just been discovered.

A user who installed Windows 10 1809 and new before its removal discovered an issue while extracting files from a .ZIP archive. After submitting the bug on the feedback hub he shared it on the Reddit forum. If the extraction of an archive works well, the concern comes from the warning supposed to be displayed when a file of the same name is already present at the destination location.

A right-click on an archive launches the file extraction via the entry "Extract all", the user is then prompted to choose a location on his computer. If a file from the archive has the same name as a file present in the destination folder Windows 10 usually stops the procedure to ask the user if he should replace the file by "overwriting" it or if he retains the original file.

In Windows 10 1809 this warning no longer appears. By default and according to tests carried out on a Windows 10 1809 machine, the files are not overwritten but kept. Windows 10 does not copy the files and keeps the original one, but does not warn the user as it should. To avoid this problem users can turn to a third-party application like 7zip.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem in a message on its forums and confirms that the files are not replaced. However, there may be data loss when the user uses explorer to open the file and uses move to a new folder that contains an identical file. In this case, it will be necessary to recover the file moved to the trash or the temporary files. The publisher also recommends not to use cut and paste in compressed files, which could cause loss of data without possibility of recovery.

A patch will be proposed, it should be available at the beginning of November. In the meantime users are advised to extract their compressed files to a new folder to avoid any conflicts. The bug that led to the October update being suspended and causing personal files to be deleted has already been fixed, other fixes are still being tested as of last week.
