How to connect wired headphones to TV
To connect headphones to the TV using the cable supplied, you must first check if the TV in your possession has the appropriate input for headphones - the classic hole for jack from 3,5mm -, usually identified by an icon in the shape of headphones, from the writing Headphones, AUX or H / P. Check carefully for this inlet on the rear or side of the TV, moving any protective “doors” if necessary.
Once you have identified the right slot, insert the jack from 3,5 mm of the headphones inside the same, so as to "hijack" the audio produced by the TV directly into the headphones. Usually, the redirection of the audio takes place completely automatically: therefore, you do not have to touch any key or access any menu to immediately start listening to the sound from the headphones. When you are done, you can start listening to the sounds through the TV speakers again by simply unplugging the headphones.
If your headphones have a detachable cable and the cable is too short, you can go for a longer cable (5 or 10 meters, for example), with two 3.5mm jacks (one end will need to be installed in the headphones, the other in the TV). Such cables are available in electronics and computer stores as well as online.
If your TV does not have a 3.5mm jack input but has an input RCA (the red, white and yellow housings designed to contain as many "plugs", so to speak) and you still want to take advantage of the cable connection for the headphones, then you can equip yourself with a 3,5mm female RCA-Jack adapter, able to pick up the audio signal from the RCA outputs present.
Once you have the adapter, connect the headphone jack to the appropriate input located on it, then connecting the RCA output cables to their respective slots on the TV. In this case, however, you have to manually activate the redirection of the sound to the headphones: to do this, access the menu Settings of the TV, go to the section Audio and, as the output device, select the item RCA o Analog audio output. Please note, however, that although this procedure applies to many televisions on the market, the menu items may vary slightly from model to model.
How to connect wireless headphones to the TV
If using the cable to listen to the contents of the TV seems too inconvenient and you have decided to rely on a pair of wireless headphones, this is the part of the guide for you: in the lines to come, I will explain how to connect to the TV both devices equipped with a special radio frequency (RF) receiver, and Bluetooth headphones.
Headphones with receiver
The wireless headphones you purchased have one autonomous transmission base? In this case, it is sufficient to connect the base itself to the appropriate input on the television, supply electricity via the appropriate cable and, finally, switch on the receiver. In this case, you should be able to use both the classic headphone input (the 3.5mm jack) both the entrances RCA (the red and white plugs, to be connected to the respective inputs on the TV), depending on the receiver and the TV in your possession.
Note: As for the 3.5mm jack, the audio stream is automatically moved to the headphones. As for the connection of the receiver via RCA, it is necessary, instead, to manually set the exact audio source, as I explained to you in the previous section of this guide.
Anyway, once the receiver is turned on and connected to the TV, turn on the wireless headphones and listen if the audio is clear and clear: if there is interference, you may have to select a different transmission frequency both on the charging base of the headphones , which on the receiver (generally, it is a kind of small switch identified by the wording Channel o Channel). Make sure both devices are operating on the same frequency and repeat listening until you find the ideal setup for your scenario.
Compared to Bluetooth ones, Radio Frequency (RF) headphones offer greater coverage (up to 20 meters without obstacles), but can be easily disturbed by other devices that use the same frequencies (for example walkie-talkies), decreasing by made the highest quality you can get from this type of wireless connection.
Bluetooth headphones
You have wireless headphones that are compatible with the technology Bluetooth? Perfect, then this is the part of the guide that is right for you: if you have a TV equipped with a Bluetooth connection module, then you can make the direct connection between it and the audio device in your possession. If not, you can get comfortable Bluetooth adapters, easily plugged into the dedicated jack for headphones or RCA devices.
TV with integrated Bluetooth
As for televisions natively equipped with Bluetooth, the pairing procedure for headphones is really very simple to implement. First of all, set the Bluetooth headphones in detection mode (or pairing): to do this, it is usually sufficient to press and hold the power button (with the headphones off) for at least 5-6 seconds, or until the status LED starts flashing rapidly.
If you do not know how to activate the pairing, I suggest you read the instruction manual in the package of the headphones: you will certainly find more information on the subject.
Once the headphones have been set in pairing mode, access the TV configuration menu (by pressing the Settings, Settings or the shaped one gear remote control), brought to the section Audio, select the menu or item related to Bluetooth (With art. LG Sound Sync / Bluetooth) and press the button OK remote control.
Next, tap on the item Device Selection, press the button again OK and wait a few moments for the Bluetooth headphones to be detected. As soon as they appear in the list of paired devices, select them and press the OK button on the remote control to finalize the connection.
For this guide, I relied on the procedure to be implemented on LG TVs equipped with the WebOS operating system, however the steps are also quite similar on other Smart TV models, even from other manufacturers. If you have not managed to achieve your goal by following the procedure explained above, I invite you to carefully read my guide on how to connect Bluetooth headphones to the TV, in which I have been able to provide you with even more specific details.
TV without Bluetooth
Does your TV model not integrate the Bluetooth module? In this case, if you already own Bluetooth headphones and want to use them anyway, you can use a special adapter designed for the purpose. For starters, check to see if your TV has a dock for the jack from 3.5mm (the "classic" one for headphones): if so, you could use a Bluetooth adapter among the many available online or in electronics stores.
These adapters, powered by an internal rechargeable battery, allow the audio coming from the TV to be transmitted on the Bluetooth frequencies: simply connect the adapter to the TV's headphone output, set the headphones to pairing mode (as I explained to you in the previous section) and press the appropriate button located on the adapter to finalize the connection.
If, on the other hand, your TV has sunshine RCA inputs, you can use another type of adapter powered by an internal battery, whose operation is very similar to the adapter seen above. The only difference concerns the connection method between it and the TV: in this case, all you have to do is use the supplied cables and connect the colored ends to the appropriate input holes of both devices.
Once the connection is complete and the headphones are paired with the receiver, access the audio settings of the TV to indicate analog / RCA audio as the output device. For more information on connecting the various types of wireless headphones to the TV, I invite you to consult my specific tutorial on how to connect wireless headphones to the TV.
In addition, I point out that devices such as Amazon Fire TV Stick and Apple TV are equipped with native Bluetooth support and therefore allow you to play the audio of their contents via Bluetooth headphones. For more information on this, consult my guides dedicated to the devices just mentioned.
How to connect multiple headphones to the TV
How do you say? You want to enjoy a movie on TV with your partner without waking up the sleeping children in the next room and you mean use two pairs of headphones? This is an absolutely feasible operation: below I intend to explain how to proceed, depending on the type of headphones you have (with cable or not).
Connect multiple headphones via cable
If you want to use at the same time two pairs of headphones connectable with jack from 3.5mm, you can equip yourself with a special "splitter" designed for the purpose: this small device can be purchased both in electronics stores and on the Internet, at a cost of a few euros.
Once you have made the purchase, you simply have to connect the splitter plug to the appropriate TV input, and then connect both headphone cables to the two "holes" located on it. Nothing simpler!
Connect multiple Bluetooth headphones
If you intend to connect two Bluetooth headphones to the TV at the same time, I recommend that you first make sure that the TV in your possession natively integrates the possibility of managing multiple Bluetooth audio devices at the same time, by browsing through the various menus or by consulting the user manual of the same.
If not, you can brilliantly solve the problem by equipping yourself with a external Bluetooth transmitter which allows you to connect two Bluetooth headphones at the same time: in this case, both devices must be paired with the splitter and not with the TV. The transmitter in question can be connected to the TV either via a 3.5mm jack or via an input SPDIF / TOSLINK.
